Cooperation ensures supply of renewable energy to 237 TIM sites in the state, from Vale do Paraíba

TIM announces, in partnership with EDP, a company that operates in all segments of the electricity sector, two new solar plants for the state of São Paulo. Located in Taubaté (SP), the projects should generate 3.7 Gwh/year for the operator, enough to supply approximately 2,580 homes and guarantee the supply of renewable energy to 237 operator stores. The project also benefits the environment, as it will avoid the emission of 465 tons of carbon dioxide per year, the equivalent of planting 2,853 trees.

The initiative is part of TIM Brasil's National Distributed Generation Plan, initiated in 2017 and which today has 24 solar, hydro and biogas power plants in operation in 21 states. By 2012, there will be a total of 60 plants with monthly generation of 38 GWh of energy, enough to supply a city with 150,000 inhabitants. This year alone, TIM activated 10 solar plants in Brazil. For Bruno Gentil, Chief Business Support Officer of TIM Brasil, this is an important initiative of the company, in line with the operator's solid performance in ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance): “Renewable energy sources are essential in the energy generation project of TIM The partnership with EDP meets the growing demand for alternative forms. We believe that this is a long-term job, and we are happy to have EDP as a partner who also thinks about the future”.

With the delivery of the photovoltaic plants to TIM, EDP reaches 58.9 MWp in solar energy projects – 30.8 MWp under development and 28.1 MWp already installed for clients such as Banco do Brasil, Multiplan and Grupo Globo. “Even with the pandemic scenario, EDP continues to complete its projects, maintaining its commitment to the excellence for which it is recognized in the market. The new complex delivered to TIM, one of the biggest players in the Brazilian telecommunications market, reinforces the credibility gained by EDP in the solar energy segment”, says Carlos Andrade, vice president of Strategy and New Business at EDP in Brazil.

Technical characteristics of the project

  • Localization: Taubate - SP
  • Installed capacity: two photovoltaic power plants with a power of 2,049 MWp and 1,871 MWp, totaling 3.92 MWp
  • Modules: 11,880 of RISEN 330Wp - RSM72-6-330P (330W)
  • Inverters: 19 from HUAWEI SUN2000-185KTL (175kW)
  • Generation: 6,196 MWh/year, enough to supply 2,581 households (considering an annual consumption per household of 2,400 kWh/year)
  • Avoided carbon dioxide: 465 tons per year
  • Trees: equivalent to planting 2,853 trees

Solar energy market

According to the Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy (Absolar), in 2020 Brazil surpassed the mark of 7 gigawatts (GW) of installed power in the photovoltaic solar source, with almost 3 GW in centralized generation and just over 4 GW in generation distributed. Since 2012, more than R$ 35.4 billion have been invested in the sector, which has generated 210,000 new jobs and collected R$ 10.4 billion in taxes. The use of the energy source avoided the emission of more than 1.1 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

In distributed generation, the country has 3.7 gigawatts of installed power from the photovoltaic solar source, which represents more than R$ 15 billion in investments since 2012, spread across the five national regions. In centralized solar generation, there is 3.0 GW of installed power, equivalent to 1.7% of the Brazilian electricity matrix. The total investments foreseen until 2025 referring to projects already contracted in energy auctions exceed R$ 25.8 billion.
