Vitória receives artistic programming to launch the EDP in Arts the Award

Young artists from Espírito Santo have until June 8th to to register their works in the contest, which will award three winners with an artistic residence in Brazil or abroad

The EDP Institute and the Tomie Ohtake Institute bring a special schedule of activities on contemporary art to the population of the state. Between April 18 and 22, at the Museum of Art of Espírito Santo Dionísio Del Santo - MAES, there will be talk tables, courses and workshops with names like Paulo Miyada, Gabriel Zacarias, Luise Malmaceda, Virgínia de Medeiros and Santídio Pereira. The initiative is part of the launch of the 6th edition of the EDP in the Arts Award, aimed at young artists from all over Brazil, born or resident in the country for at least two years, aged between 18 and 29 years.

"The EDP Institute, since its creation ten years ago, as one of its main objectives, has to promote art and culture in Espírito Santo. The EDP in the Arts Award is one of the main actions of the Company in this front, fostering the development of contemporary art and helping to educate the new generations of great artists ", reinforces Luis Carlos Gouveia Pereira, executive director of IEDP.

The talk table "What is contemporary art for? " Proposes to an artist, an art history teacher and a curator, a question that rather than being answered, it is intended to evoke the discussion on the intentions and unfolding of the art produced today. Among the participants of the discussion, art history teacher Gabriel Zacarias, curator of the Tomie Ohtake Institute, Paulo Miyada and artist Virginia de Medeiros.

Professor of Art History of the State University in Campinas, Gabriel Zacarias intends to address during this two meeting course the different ways through which art has attempted to demarcate a specific territory to the contemporary, embracing artistic and curatorial practices conceived as distinct from the modernist experience. From postmodern to the global art, the course tries to understand the process of expansion of these artistic practices that, moving away from the constraints of canonical modernism, delineate the expanded field of current art.

The portfolio is an instrument that presents a cut or a panoramic view of the production of an artist. It is a recurrent prerequisite in the selective process. Researcher and curator at Tomie Ohtake Institute, Luise Malmaceda proposes a space for dialogue that collaborates in the processes and key issues in the portfolio development. Participants are requested to take a presentation of their jobs printed or in digital format for the conversation with the curator.

Artists and people interested in art are invited to a conversation with Luara Monteiro and Miro Soares. Both will present their trajectories under the supervision of the artist and professor André Arçari and the curator Luise Malmaceda.

April 22nd from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

- Workshop of Woodcutting

- With Santídio Pereira de Sousa

The artist Santídio Pereira de Sousa realizes a woodcutting workshop which seeks to present participants with technical aspects of the processes of picture in linoleum, MDF and compensated wood by means of the artistic production and atelier practices, for the creation of logos, printing of posters, illustrations, wheat-paste, poems and a series of woodcuts in small and medium formats, colorful and in Black & White, among others.

About the 6th Energies in Art Award

Designed to foster contemporary artistic production, the EDP award in Arts is aimed at young artists from all over Brazil, born or resident in the country for at least two years, aged between 18 and 29 years. The initiative, in addition to the awards, includes a series of activities throughout the year, such as courses, lectures and workshops in Brazilian regions where access to contemporary art is more restricted.

Interested parties can register until June 8th, sending their portfolio with proposals for works through the www.premioedpnasartes.institutotomieohtake.org.br. The page also offers a publication, in PDF format, with suggestions on organization and presentation of the works of art. The material is intended to serve as one of the possible sources of inquiry about the process.

The Award concludes with the presentation of the works of the 10 finalists in the Tomie Ohtake Institute, when, at the inauguration on November 29th, the three award winners will be announced, and will receive scholarships to the artistic residence in Brazil or abroad. The award is a initiative from Tommy Ohtake Institute and EDP, a company that operates in all segments of the electricity sector, through the EDP Institute, an organization that manages investments of the group.
