EDP upgrades lighting system at the Caraguatatuba Emergency Care Unit

Energy savings from illumination will be up to 20%; Over 800 power hungry light bulbs will be replaced with LEDs

EDP, the energy distributor for Caraguatatuba, has begun upgrading the lighting system at the Caraguatatuba Emergency Care Unit (ECA). The EDP campaign will modernize the old lighting system, replacing the old bulbs with more efficient, economic and sustainable LED lights. Over 800 light bulbs will be replaced in the Hospital’s internal and external areas.

This lighting system will generate 20% in savings or 65 megawatts-hour (MWh/year), equivalent to the average annual consumption of over 30 families. Maintenance costs will also drop as LED lights have a lifespan of 25 thousand hours (around seven times longer than incandescent bulbs). The new system will also reduce any environmental impact it does not use mercury or other toxic components.

“We are very happy to be deploying our second energy efficiency project in the Northern Coast region and delivering it in under a month. The first was at the São Sebastião Hospital de Clínicas. It is very satisfying to help these organizations make these savings, as LEDs are known for their lower energy usage, higher yield and longer working life, all with a much reduced environmental impact. This will generate significant energy savings for the ECU”, said Luciano Cavalcante, Managing Director at EDP.

At the energy efficiency project should be concluded by the end of May. The project was selected during the Public Call for Projects, part of EDP’s Energy Efficiency Program, which is regulated by the National Electrical Energy Agency - ANEEL. The Distributor will cover the R$ 50 thousand project cost, which includes materials, equipment, labor, waste disposal, training, marketing, measurements and result verification costs.
