EDP joins global transition to electric fleet

Friday 08, March 2019

EDP is the only Portuguese company to join The Climate Group’s EV 100 commitment, alongside other multinational companies that are making the transition to electric mobility.

EDP has recently joined the EV 100 movement, a global initiative that unites major companies investing in the transition to electric mobility with a view to achieving comprehensive use of electrical transportation by 2030. As transportation accounts for around 23% of greenhouse gas emissions and the transition to an electric fleet represents a strategy to significantly reduces global warming, EV 100 has asked automobile manufacturers attending the Geneva Automobile Show to increase their investments in electric vehicles.

In 2018, EDP set out its long term goals to promote electric mobility and is committed to transitioning its fleet of over 3000 vehicles by 2030, in an effort to cut around 70% of the fleet CO2 emissions.

At these goals are part of EDP’s multi-area strategy to tackle climate changes and drive economic decarbonization, which led to the company joining the Climate Group initiative, a non-profit institution whose members include Governments, companies and organizations focusing on a common goal of protecting the planet and preventing global warming from reaching over 1.5ºC.

“This energy transition will provide a greater interaction between smart mobility and the energy sector. Today, electric mobility already plays a crucial role as the main enabler of decarbonization. EDP has a series of initiatives to accelerate this development and is proud to be one of the companies leading this change. We recently committed to having a 100% electric fleet by 2030 and we are focusing on new commercial solutions and partnerships to streamline the transition to electric vehicles”, said António Mexia, CEO of the EDP group.

Helen Clarkson, CEO of The Climate Group, said: “We are in urgent need of actions that benefit the environment because air pollution represents an ever-increasing risk to public health and emissions from transportation continue to rise. These companies are looking at electric vehicles as a major step forward. We now need many more companies to join our cause and accelerate their transition towards a future with greener transportation systems. Automobile manufacturers should focus their efforts on this transition and begin offering the vehicles companies want, or risk losing market share”.

Postal service companies from Switzerland and Austria, as well as New Zealand-based energy company Meridian Energy, have also joined the global commitment. Together, these four companies, who are now joining the EV 100 movement, will replace around 20 thousand combustion engine vehicles with electric alternatives.

About EV100: EV100 is a global initiative by The Climate Group and brings together companies that are committed to making the transition to electric vehicles and aspire to make them the main of mobility option by 2030.

At the transportation industry is currently responsible for around 23% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. This is why the automobile sector transformation is crucial to achieving the goal of reducing global emissions. Electric transportation offers an effective solution to help mitigate climate change, in addition to reducing air and noise pollution from conventional combustion vehicles.

Based on the fleets they manage, which represents half of all vehicles currently in use, the corporate sector will play a decisive role in this transition and could influence choices the automobile industry makes through its investment decisions and by setting an example for millions of employees and customers worldwide.

By setting an ambitious timeframe for purchasing electric vehicles, companies can significantly increase demand for electric vehicles and help make them accessible for everyone.
