Thursday 07, February 2019

The Company announced new projects for 2019 in addition to current social and educational projects in areas where the EDP Group operates.

At the initiatives launched by the EDP Institute, an organization created eleven years ago to manage the EDP Group’s social and environmental activities, benefited over 80 thousand people in 2018 in states where the company operates: Amapá,  Bahia, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Tocantins, Espírito Santo, São Paulo, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. Over R$ 13.6 million was invested in initiatives to promote Education, Culture, Sports, Volunteering, Social Development, Health and Income Generation.

In 2018, programs such as EDP in Schools, Aprender e Crescer, Manobra do Bem, Brincando com Pipas and Caravanas do Esporte (Learn & Grow, Doing Good, Playing with Kites and Sports Caravanas) sought to support human development of local children and youngsters, as well as entire communities.

In addition to the projects backed by the Institution, 694 employees from all the company’s operating regions provided 7,958 hours of volunteer work on several campaigns focusing on the elderly, children, homeless people, animals, the disabled, the environment and the safe energy use. Over 500 hours were spent cleaning the beaches in Caraguatatuba (SP) and Taíbe (CE); As part of the Natal sem Fome (Christmas without Hunger) campaign, 11 tons of food were donated to over 500 vulnerable families from São Gonçalo do Amarante (CE); A community garden was planted in Serra (ES) to feed over 900 children at the Lar Semente do Amor Association and the “Safe Energy Use” theme reached out to over 15 thousand people via the São Paulo and Espírito Santo Distributors, underlining EDP’s goal of “using energy to take better care of the community”.

At the EDP Institute manages the Desafio do Bem (Challenge for Good), a program now in its eighth year which encourages peopel to volunteer through team building - in addition to EDP staff, relatives, friends or employees from other companies can also take part. Each team chooses a local social organization to assist.

“We are very happy with the way the Institution’s programs are developing. EDP associates are becoming increasingly engaged in the Company’s social causes and are becoming social agents for transformation”, said Luiz Carlos Gouveia, director of the EDP Institute.

EDP also supports efforts to promote the Portuguese language. Over the past two years, EDP used to a truck to take a travelling exhibition, called "The Power of the Portuguese Language", around the country. Visitors to the exhibition are able to learn more about the countries that speak Portuguese , the background to common sayings, the language’s specific characteristics and the differences between Portuguese spoken in Portugal and Brazil. Portuguese is the fourth most popular language in the world and the most common language in the southern hemisphere.
