Learn simple steps to save power consumption

In recent years, with air conditioning increased popularity, the need for responsible use is more important than ever. When it comes to the efficient use of natural resources, combatting energy waste is imperative. EDP, the electricity distributor in Alto Tietê, Paraíba Valley and the North Coast, is giving people guidance with steps that can be incorporated into everyday life.

Air conditioning

So that the air conditioner does not consume more energy than necessary, it recommended to seal all possible air vents, for example by ensuring doors and windows are closed. Follow the manufacturer instructions and always keep it free of dirt and blockages which may hinder its proper functioning. Used for a month, 8 hours a day, the power consumption can vary between 160 and 260 kWh, depending on the equipment thermal power (BTU/h).

Fan

A 120W ceiling fan on for 8 hours a day, will consume on average 30 kWh per month. When leaving the room, turn off the appliance. Prioritise natural ventilation and open doors and windows.

Internal electrical wiring

Check regularly if the internal power supply is in a good condition and suitable for the amount of electricity used in the building. Avoid the use of adapters, as too many connections in the same outlet may cause it heat and cause a so-called "current leakage", wasting energy.

Shower

You can reduce the energy consumption of one of the main culprits of energy consumption during the summer. Due to higher temperatures, electric showers can be switched to "summer mode". Taking this simple action can reduce energy use by up to 30%. Also remember that the ideal showering time is about 8 minutes.

Refrigerators

Opening and closing the door of the refrigerator and freezer too frequently should be avoided. This allows heat to enter and forces the appliances to work more, increasing their electricity consumption. We recommend checking the rubber sealing whenever possible.

Lighting

During the day, take advantage of natural light. Replace bulbs with compact fluorescent or LED ones, starting in the rooms where the lights are used most. If you use an 100W bulb, replacing it with a 32W fluorescent one can lead to a 60% energy saving.
