EDP, company present in all sectors of the Brazilian electric market, was granted the Installation License (LI) by the Secretary of Environmental issues and Natural Resources of the state of Maranhão (SEMA) to commence the construction of 127 kilometers of electrical energy transmission lines that will support the state’s electric grid. The LI allows for immediate construction of what is called Lot 7, which has not only two transmission lines, but will also be for a new energy sub-station in São Luís.   

This venture, acquired at auction 005/2016 held by ANEEL, aims to increase supply of electric energy to the North of Maranhão, crossing the counties of São Luís, Bacabeira, Santa Rita, Anajatuba, Itapecuru Mirim and Miranda do Norte. With an investment of around R$ 400 million, the construction should generate up to 500 direct jobs in the region. “According to a rigorous schedule of work planned, EDP expects to conclude this construction ahead of time as we have done time and again, in order to reinforce the electric grid in Maranhão, boosting the economy and bringing new jobs to the state” claims Luiz Otávio Henriques, vice-president of Generation and Transmission in EDP Brazil.       

Also in Maranhão, EDP began in early 2019 the construction of the electrical ventures associated with Lot 11, which include a new power substation in Chapadinha and two 230 kV transmission lines in the counties of Miranda do Norte, Matão do Norte, Cantanhede , Pirapemas, Vargem Grande, Chapadinha and Coelho Neto, totaling 203 kilometers in extenstion. It is expected that these constructions, which had a total investment of R $ 182 million, will be completed in the first half of 2020, generating around 200 direct jobs.

Investments in Transmission for 2019

For 2019, EDP foresees a total investment of up to R$ 2 billion in constructions and transmission projects. It adds up to around R$ 3,5 billion until 2022, destined to construct over 1,4 thousand kilometers of transmission lines and six sub-stations in the states of Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Maranhão.

In May of this year, EDP acquired in the secondary market the Litoral Sul Transmissora de Energia Ltda., holder of the concession rights over Lot Q, sold in the first stage of Auction 13/2015, in April 2016. The investment for the purchase of LSTE was of R$ 407 million. Lot Q is composed of two substations and 142 kilometers of transmission lines, connecting the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.

In other new this week, EDP was granted the Preliminary License (LP) of Lot 18, crossing between the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo. The project will have an investment of around R $ 1.3 billion and will have 375 kilometers of transmission lines between the substations of Cachoeira Paulista (SP) and Estreito (MG), expanding the capacity to receive energy for the entire Southeast region.
