Thursday 30, June 2016

In line with its commitment to assuming international best practices in the areas of human rights, labor relations, the environment, and corruption, EDP Brasil, a company that operates in the areas of electricity generation, distribution, marketing and energy solutions, renews its commitment to the Global Compact.

Created in the year 2000, the initiative was developed by the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Membership is voluntary and its objective is to mobilize the international business community for the adoption in their business practices of fundamental, internationally agreed upon values and for the development of a more inclusive and sustainable global economy.

EDP Brasil has been a signatory to the Global Compact since 2006 and renews this commitment each year. Support for this means that the participating companies guide their activities by 10 general principles which they must support and respect, these being:

  1. The protection of internationally recognized human rights;

  2. Ensuring non-participation in violations of these rights;

  3. Supporting freedom of association and effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;

  4. The elimination of all forms of forced or compulsory labor;

  5. The effective abolition of child labor;

  6. The elimination of discrimination in employment;

  7. Support for a precautionary approach to environmental impacts;

  8. Development of initiatives to promote greater environmental accountability;

  9. Encouragement of the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies;

  10. Commitment to combating corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

The principles of the Global Compact are aligned with the Objectives for Sustainable Development, adopted at the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development in September of 2015.

EDP Brasil continues to participate in the Brazilian Committee of the Global Compact, which discusses themes related to the internalization of the Objetives of Sustainable Development in businesses and how companies should respond to these global challenges.

The Company is recognized for its active participation in the fields of ethics and sustainability. For 10 years it has been included on the Sustainability Index of BM&FBovespa (ISE), and also has been awarded the Ethical Seal, an initiative promoted by Office of the Comptroller General of the Union (CGU) to recognize commitment to ethics and integrity. It is also listed in the Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) of the Carbon Disclosure Project, as one of the top 10 representatives in climate performance.
