With goals set to be met by 2020, measures cover all the Group's business areas in the country

EDP Brasil, a company engaged in energy generation, trading, services and supply, announces the adoption of four climate commitments to be met by 2020, working to foster a low-carbon economy and an increasingly sustainable society.

The goals adopted by EDP Brasil comprise several areas, covering all company operation areas. In energy Generation, for instance, the asset portfolio now has a limit in terms of installed capacity from coal-based technology. As far as Supply is concerned, the company will allocate resources for the expansion of smart grids, whereas in Trading and Services the focus will be on improving energy efficiency solutions. In all these areas, resources allocated to R&D will help the company improve technologies and practices.

"We have the necessary technology and expertise to meet our goals, and by adapting these objectives to the reality of the business, we will continuously improve practices and initiatives in the pursuit of a low-carbon economy", says EDP Brasil CEO Miguel Setas.

EDP Brasil climate commitments

  • To increase electricity generation from renewable sources by limiting the weight of coal-based technology in the company generation portfolio to 25% by 2020, as well as to promote and support projects that contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions.

  • To continuously provide customers with access to products and services that contribute to greater end-use energy efficiency, reaching over 100 GWh in accumulated savings by 2020.

  • To foster partnerships in the R&D process for clean technologies, energy efficiency and smart grids, investing R$100 million up to 2020.

  • To expand telemetry coverage among low-voltage clients, investing R$100 million up to 2020 in the new smart grid paradigm with an appropriate regulatory framework.

These commitments are in line with the objectives outlined by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which aim to limit global warming to 2°C and reach zero CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions.

EDP Brasil is listed in the 2015 edition of the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) as one of the 10 companies in Brazil with better climate performance, reflecting the Company leading position in the climate management area.
