EDP and Shopping Vitória sign partnership to reduce electricity consumption

Tuesday 20, October 2015

EDP, a company engaged in electricity generation, trading, distribution and services, has signed a pioneering partnership in the state of Espírito Santo with Shopping Vitória. The purpose of the agreement is to find new ways of reducing the mall electricity consumption, and therefore lessen the use of natural resources to generate energy. The agreement between the Companies was signed in September, and the investment (about R$6 million) will provide an annual reduction equivalent to one month consumption.

One of the goals of this project, which is scheduled to be concluded in March 2016, consists of replacing six chillers - the devices responsible for air-cooling the mall public areas. The devices will consume 40% less electricity to generate the same thermal energy. It will also ensure the standardization of the system, thereby optimizing spare part and maintenance costs.

EDP Grid director Fernando Peixoto Saliba highlighted the importance of this partnership and of the project. "Energy Efficiency is based on innovations that bring benefits to the customer by improving the quality of energy services, while also fostering energy consumption reduction".

According to Cícero Nobre - Shopping Vitória Operation Manager - the agreement with EDP is crucial to expanding the mall sustainability measures. "100% of the mall energy is already sourced from renewables, and now we are going to invest even more in reducing energy consumption by 2.5 million kWh per year."
