Wholesaler reduced its energy consumption by 55% after replacing the lighting system of 74 stores with LED technology

S‹o Paulo, January 20, 2018 - The Macro wholesale network found in the project presented by EDP Brasil the solution it was looking for to promote energy efficiency and sustainability. With an investment of R$ 60 million for the replacement of the LED lighting in the indoor and outdoor stores around the country, it was possible to reduce energy consumption in lighting by up to 55% or 17,500 megawatts-hour (MWh), the equivalent of the average consumption of 7.3 thousand families.

With the energy savings, more than 1431 tonnes of CO2 will cease to be released into the atmosphere, corresponding to the planting of 11 thousand trees. In addition, there is also a reduction in maintenance costs since the durability of the LED lamp is 50,000 hours (3 to 4 times longer than fluorescent lamps), and LED generates less environmental impact since it does not contain mercury or other harmful components in its composition.

"EDP Brasil has made a commitment to reduce consumption by its customers by 100 GWh of energy by 2020 with the expansion of Solu›es em Energia, and the partnership with Makro is another example of how corporations can take advantage of our efficiency solutions to reduce costs and increase our contribution to the environment with a low initial investment, "says Aldemir Spohr, director of of EDP Solu›es em Energia.

Prior to deployment, lighting accounted for an average of 20% of the electric energy of the units, which should now be reduced to around 10%. By means of the agreement signed between the Companies, in the success fee model, monthly energy savings with new lighting will abate the initial investment.

"In addition to savings on energy consumption, energy efficiency brings many benefits, such as increased employee productivity, an appreciation of products bringing more visual comfort to the customers and the sustainable commitment to avoid waste and reduce the emission of gaseous pollutants. EDP has proven to be extremely flexible to meet the needs of Makro and this success story is the first of many that we are considering together, " says Marcos Ambrosano, President of Makro Brazil.
