EDP provides solar power system for the first sustainable metro train station in São Paulo

The new sustainable station Vila Olímpia, as a result of a partnership between Eletromidia and Santander, conferred EDP the responsibility for the implementation of photovoltaic panels

The city of São Paulo now has its first sustainable train station, Vila Olímpia, designed in a partnership between Eletromidia and Santander. EDP, a company that operates in the entire chain of the electricity sector, was responsible for the solar system, which will produce 8500 kWh of clean energy monthly.

Taking advantage of the station's environment, the company designed a solution consisting of a photovoltaic solar generator connected to the station's network. Thus, the station is generating power equivalent of 40 homes with a consumption of 200kWh/month. The metallic roof installation uses an area of around 500 m² with a generating capacity of 102 MWh per year.

“Our ambition is to lead the energy transition in countrywide scale. Therefore, we accepted the invitation to contribute to the first sustainable station in São Paulo. We took advantage of the station's own environment with an efficient solar energy solution that brings benefits to the environment. We believe that initiatives such as this project for the new Vila Olímpia sustainable station lead to the sustainable future that the planet needs”, emphasizes André Pereira, director of EDP Smart.

The environment is the main beneficiary of the action. Just in the first year of operation, the use of solar energy will avoid the emission of approximately 30 tons of CO2. This is equivalent to planting 215 trees or 13,770 kilometers traveled by a popular car.

The project

The aim of this new sustainable station is to contribute to a more pleasant experience in the paths people walk in the station. After carefully analysis of the station's flows, Eletromidia's creation team brought several solutions that reduce the environmental impact using sustainability concepts and improve the circulation and permanence of users.

The new Vila Olímpia sustainable station, designed in partnership between the OOH Eletromidia company and Santander, received solar energy and sewage reuse systems. The energy generated by the station can supply around 40 homes and the estimated monthly water savings reach 150 thousand liters of water.

The station will also have more than 1,500 m² of green area, which reduces the temperature of the environments, among other benefits. The vertical gardens will be irrigated by a system that reuses sewage water from the station itself through wetlands (filtering gardens). Basic equipment such as benches and a new marquee that protects users from the rain are made from sustainable materials. The new seats feature USB charging points for electronics, and rails for cyclists to make it easier to transport bicycles up the stairs. Improvements aimed at offering more convenience and well-being to thousands of users who pass through the station daily.
