NotreDame Intermédica Group and EDP enter into a contract to build four solar plants

Wednesday 09, June 2021

These undertakings will supply power to 60 Clinical Centers as well as avoiding the emission of 2,360 tons of CO2per year, reducing the energy cost of the Units by about 20%

The NotreDame Intermédica Group (GNDI), the country's largest healthcare operator, has just signed a contract with EDP, a multinational that operates in all segments of the electricity sector, for the implementation of four plants with approximately 4.4 MWp of installed power. The objective is to guarantee the electrical supply of the Group's 60 Clinical Centers. The term of the supply contract is 10 years, with an investment of R$ 20 million for the construction of the projects.

The plants, to be installed through EDP Smart, a division that encompasses EDP's entire portfolio of energy solutions, will use a combined area of more than 155 thousand square meters – equivalent to 15 football fields – and will use8,361 photovoltaic modules. Together, the plants will produce 4.4 MWp of power and will generate around 8,350 MWh per year, equivalent to the consumption of 2,784 homes. This means an estimated savings of more than R$ 1.2 million in the energy bill of the NotreDame Intermédica Group just in the first year of operation.

The construction of the units will also provide benefits to the environment. Annually, 515 tons of carbon dioxide will no longer be emitted, equivalent to the planting of 3,680 trees. “This project is a way to reduce the environmental impact of GNDI's activities and also to encourage a culture of responsible use of our natural resources. The plants reaffirm our commitment to adopting actions that involve all aspects of sustainability and socio-environmental criteria in our practices and in our business”, says Irlau Machado Filho, president of Grupo NotreDame Intermédica.

“EDP’s mission is to lead the energy transition, hence the importance of investments in solar generation - whether in distributed or centralized generation (utility scale) - in our strategy. Therefore, EDP is proud to have been chosen by the NotreDame Intermédica Group, a national reference in health, to run a solar energy project of this magnitude and relevance”, says João Marques da Cruz, CEO of EDP in Brazil.

For Anderlei Buzelli, vice president of ESG at Grupo NotreDame Intermédica, the project actively promotes the energy efficiency of the Clinical Centers, which will have a reduction of around 20% in the cost of electricity. “In addition to seeking better energy efficiency, with this project we are going to produce clean energy without impacting the environment. The technology used by EDP has the lowest possible impact and is coupled to our values and our commitment to sustainability, especially in the fight against climate change”, says the ESG executive.

Solar energy in Brazil

According to Absolar, in 2021, Brazil surpassed the milestone of 8 gigawatts (GW) of installed power in the photovoltaic solar source, with 4.9 GW in centralized generation and just over 3.1 GW in distributed generation. Since 2012, more than R$ 41.5 billion have been invested in this sector, having thereby created 240 thousand jobs and collected R$ 11.9 billion in taxes. The use of the energy source avoided the emission of more than 1.1 million tons of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Aware of this, EDP has a unit dedicated to the implementation of solar self-production and distributed generation projects, being in charge for the construction, operation and maintenance of systems. The Company ended 2020 with 65.3 MWp of solar energy in its portfolio - 34.5 MWp in projects already handed over to clients such as Banco do Brasil, TIM, Claro, and Johnson & Johnson, in addition to 30.8 MWp in projects under development. In February, EDP announced the acquisition of AES Inova, AES Brasil's distributed generation investment platform, which adds almost 34 MWp to EDP Smart's portfolio through assets located in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo and Minas Gerais and ready to build  projects.
