EDP starts operation of transmission line and power substations in Maranhão
With a total investment of R$ 400 million, Lot 07 has its first section delivered 17 months in advance
EDP, a company that operates in the entire chain of the Brazilian electricity industry, has completed the necessary steps to energize and integrate into the National Interconnected System one of the two sections of Lot 07 of power transmission lines, acquired in the Aneel Auction no. 005/2016. This first phase includes the line connecting the São Luís IV and São Luís II power substations, as well as the São Luis II and São Luis IV substations of EDP Transmissão MA I S.A..
The completion of the first section anticipates by 17 months the date foreseen in the calendar of the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL). This advance was contributed with the commitment of the suppliers involved, the strict monitoring of the schedule and the competent conduct of the environmental licensing process by the State Secretariat for the Environment and Natural Resources of Maranhão (Sema).
This endeavor, which represents a total investment of R$ 400 million by EDP, opened around 500 direct jobs in Maranhão. This development’s mission is to increase the supply of electricity in the north of the state, strengthening the necessary infrastructure to boost economic growth in the region.
“Once again, EDP stands out for its excellence in the execution of its works. It is for this reason that the Transmission segment remains one of the Company's priorities for the coming years. We wish to acquire new contracts in the primary market through auctions, and in the secondary market as well, but our interest will always be in unbuilt lots, to which we can add our know-how in managing large infrastructure projects and implement the asset rotation strategy”, says João Marques da Cruz, CEO of EDP in Brazil.
The second part of lot 07, which includes the 500 KV Miranda II /São Luiz II transmission line, to be connected to the Miranda II power substation, is expected to power up in this first semester.
“In spite of a pandemic scenario, we were able to maintain the schedule for anticipating delivery of the first part of Lot 7. This was possible thanks to our commitment to the safety and health of our employees and the commitment of suppliers and government agencies. We will continue to work to also anticipate the completion of the second section of this project, which will contribute so much to the economy of Maranhão”, stresses Luiz Otávio Henriques, vice president of Generation, Transmission and Trading at EDP in Brazil.
Transmission Investments
EDP has already invested R$ 3.3 billion in works and Transmission projects, representing 80% of total CAPEX execution. A total of R$ 4.1 billion will be allocated by the end of 2021 for the construction of more than 1.5 thousand kilometers of lines and six substations in the states of Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Maranhão and Espírito Santo .
In February 2021, the Company acquired Mata Grande Transmissora de Energia LTDA, from the IG group, in the secondary market and, therefore, the granting contract for Lot 18, located in Maranhão and auctioned at the ANEEL Transmission Auction No. 002/2018, held in April 2018. The Lot comprises a 113 km transmission line at 230 kV, across nine municipalities and will connect with the substations Imperatriz and Porto Branco, with the objective of strengthening the power supply in the state.
In August 2020, EDP concluded, with 12 months in advance, the construction of the 230 KV transmission line (LT) - SE Miranda II /SE Chapadinha II, which is part of Lot 11 of the Aneel Auction No. 005/2016. Lot 11 is composed of two transmission lines totaling 203 kilometers in length. The first section, the 230 KV TL - SE Coelho Neto / SE Chapadinha II, 74 kilometers long, has been in full operation since January 2020, with 19 months in advance. With the acquisition, EDP now has seven lots of power transmission lines in its portfolio.
