EDP hands over solar plant to NGK

Monday 15, March 2021

The development is the largest photovoltaic system in the Alto Tietê region. A generation of 1,821 MWh is estimated, avoiding the emission of 104 tons of CO2 in the year

EDP, a multinational that operates in the whole chain of the electricity industry, through EDP Smart, a division that encompasses the Company’s entire portfolio of energy solutions, delivered its second solar power plant built for NGK do Brasil, a company that operates in the automotive and porcelain coatings segments. Located in Mogi das Cruzes (SP), the new plant will supply the NGK factory with 1,821 MWh of energy per year, enough to supply 758 homes with an average annual consumption of 2,400 kWh.

The enterprise has 3 thousand 420Wp modules and nine inverters, which use two hectares of the factory’s land. To make the most of the available area, EDP deployed a solution that divided the installation of solar panels between roof and ground, whereas the generated energy is put into the industrial plant itself. The project was completed in less than three months, from mobilization to powering up the plant.

The new solar plant will result in savings of 7% in the company’s energy consumption, in addition to benefits to the environment, allowing NGK to stop emitting the equivalent of 104 tons of carbon dioxide, corresponding to the planting of 645 trees per year. In November 2019, EDP had already delivered a pilot project for NGK with installed power of 36.7kWp, with 102 modules of 360Wp.

“This project reflects EDP’s commitment to providing tailor-made solutions to its customers, since the project was divided between two areas on NGK’s land, in addition to ensuring savings and more sustainability for the company's operation,” says Carlos Andrade, VP of EDP’s Strategy and New Business.

“NGK establishes Environmental Policy, Objectives and Goals based on a global vision called ‘ECO VISION’, which aims to build a sustainable society, using exclusive technology to develop and offer environmentally friendly products. This project meets the goals of reducing the effects on climate change, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions and, thus, preventing global warming” highlighted Nivaldo Yano, head of the Environment Department at NGK do Brasil.

Focus on solar energy

According to Absolar, in 2020, Brazil surpassed the milestone of 7 gigawatts (GW) of installed power in the photovoltaic solar source, with almost 3 GW in centralized generation and just over 4 GW in distributed generation. Since 2012, more than R$ 35.4 billion have been invested in this sector, having thereby created 210 thousand new jobs and collected R$ 10.4 billion in taxes. The use of the energy source avoided the emission of more than 1.1 million tons of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Aware of this, EDP has a unit dedicated to the implementation of solar self-production and distributed generation projects, which operates in the construction, operation and maintenance of systems. The Company ended 2020 with 65.3 MWp of solar energy in its portfolio - 34.5 MWp in projects already handed over to clients such as Banco do Brasil, TIM, Claro, and Johnson & Johnson, in addition to 30.8 MWp in projects under development. In December, the Company signed an investment agreement in Blue Sol Participações SA, with the objective of acquiring a capital stake of up to 40% in the company, which operates in the B2C photovoltaic solar generation segment, with a model that includes complete solutions from the conception of the project, equipment supply, installation and documentary procedures to make the connection with the local energy concessionaire feasible. Blue Sol has a network of 34 franchises spread across 16 states. With the implementation of the business, EDP seeks to obtain greater sales capillarity in the B2C solar energy segment.
