The charging stations will form part of the Plug & GO ultra-fast charging network

The electric mobility infrastructure available on Brazilian highways has just been reinforced. This is because EDP, a company that operates throughout the value chain of the electric sector, and Rede Graal, the most complete chain of service stations on the country's roads, announced a partnership to install eight charging points for electric vehicles in the State of São Paulo. The charging stations will be part of the Plug & GO project, the first and largest ultra-fast electric car-charging network in South America, an initiative in partnership with manufacturers Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen.

The eight charging stations will have their installations started in 2020, at the following Graal stations: Buenos Aires (Rod. Regis Bittencourt km 449 - Registro); Petropen (Régis Bittencourt Highway km 461 - Pariquera-Açu); Coral (Anhanguera Highway km 210 - Pirassununga); Topázio (SP 330 km 140 - Limeira); 125 Sul (Bandeirantes Highway Km 125 - Santa Bárbara d’Oeste); Trevo (Anhanguera Highway , Km 320, s/n - Ribeirão Preto SP); Mairiporã (Fernão Dias Highway, km 62 – Mairiporã); e Rancho Português (Fernão Dias Highway, km 70 – Mairiporã)..

The expectation, in a second stage, is to reach 15 charging stations installed at Graal stations, including two units in Minas Gerais. In this way, EDP would now have charging stations in all states in the Southeast region. The Company currently has 50 active charging points in the country and expects to triple the size of this network by the end of 2022.

“EDP wants to ensure that electric car drivers have a fast and safe recharge experience. For this reason, we are very happy to have Rede Graal as a partner in this project and in other recharging points that we will install over the next year”, says Nuno Pinto, head of Electric Mobility and B2C Business at EDP in Brazil.

“The Rede Graal supports and participates in the Research and Development project approved by ANEEL, as it understands the importance of increasing the electric energy recharge infrastructure for electric vehicle owners and users of the main Brazilian highways”, comments Nivaldo Júnior, manager of Expansion of the Rede Graal.

EDP and electric mobility

EDP has a global commitment to electrify 100% of its fleet by 2030, as well as to develop new offers and commercial solutions that promote the energy transition. In Brazil, the company has already made important investments in the sector. In 2018, it inaugurated an electric vehicle supply corridor between Rio and São Paulo. Installed along 430 kilometers of the Presidente Dutra Highway, the charging stations made it possible to make a complete trip by electric vehicle between the two most populous capitals in Brazil. At the end of 2019, EDP completed the installation of the largest electric vehicle-recharging network in Espírito Santo, with the implementation of seven charging points distributed by the State.

In 2019, EDP presented, in Aneel's Public Call for Electric Mobility, projects that, together, represent an investment of around R$ 50 million, via Aneel's Research and Development Fund, its own and partner resources. The main one foresees the installation with 30 ultra-fast charging points that will cover the entire State of São Paulo and connect the main electric corridors in the country, connecting the capital of São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro, Vitória, Curitiba and Florianópolis and forming a corridor with more 2,500 kilometers long. This is the first and largest project in South America to install ultrafast chargers (150kw and 350kw), with an investment of R$ 32.9 million. The first of these was implemented in October and another 10 are planned by the end of this year.

In October, EDP entered into a partnership with Unidas, a leader in the fleet outsourcing market and the second largest car rental company in Brazil, to strengthen the electric car rental market. Unidas will be responsible for providing electric cars for the corporate and individual segments (Rent a Car), and EDP will act as a supplier of a set of solutions, including electric chargers customized to the needs of each customer, the installation and maintenance of this equipment, a load management platform, in addition to the energy supply offer, which, among other possibilities, can be made through a contract for the sale and installation of panels for solar generation, in order to meet the fleet's energy demand. The initiative aims to meet the growing demand of companies and consumers for non-polluting mobility options that, in addition to being environmentally friendly, provide significant savings in fuel and maintenance costs.
