EDP modernizes the lighting and refrigeration system of hospitals in the State

Thursday 20, August 2020

Decreased energy consumption enables new investments and improvements in hospitals. The resource contributed by EDP totals more than R$ 2.1 million

EDP, an electric energy distributor in Espírito Santo, provided significant savings in energy consumption at Dr. Jayme Santos Neves hospitals, in Serra, Evangélico, in Vila Velha, and at Madre Regina Protmann, in Santa Teresa, in Espírito Santo. The action included the modernization of the old lighting system by LED lamps, which are more efficient, economical and sustainable, and the modernization of the refrigeration system with the installation of environmental conditioning devices.

The three projects were included in the Public Call for Projects of EDP's Energy Efficiency Program, which is regulated by the National Agency of Electrical Energy - ANEEL.

At Dr. Jayme Santos Neves State Hospital, in Serra, which is currently the reference in Espírito Santo in the treatment of patients with Covid-19, approximately R$ 450 thousand was invested in replacing 9,106 lighting points with LED technology, enabling a reduction in energy consumption of 1,102.40 MWh/year, equivalent to the consumption of 459 families during one year (considering the consumption of 200kWh/month per household). The work was carried out during 2019.

In Santa Teresa, the contemplated hospital was Mother Regina Protmann and the project was completed this year. The institution received an investment of approximately R$ 290 thousand and 2,225 lighting points were replaced by LED technology, allowing a reduction in energy consumption of 175.67 MWh/year, equivalent to the consumption of 73 families for one year.

The replacement of lighting also reduces maintenance costs, since the LED lamp lasts for around 25 thousand hours (about 25 times more than incandescent lamps and 4 times more than compact fluorescent lamps). The new system also generates less environmental impact because it does not have mercury and other harmful components in its composition.

Through investments, EDP provides more safety and comfort to the population that uses hospitals and their employees.

At the Evangelical Hospital of Vila Velha, five new environmental conditioning devices were installed, with an investment of approximately R$ 455 thousand, generating a reduction in consumption of around 128.07 MWh/year, which is equivalent to the consumption of 53 families over a year.

"For us, it is very gratifying to carry out these projects at Jaime Santos Neves Hospitals, in Serra, Evangélico, in Vila Velha, and at Madre Regina Protmann, in Santa Teresa, as we are able to contribute directly to the reduction of energy costs. Through our energy efficiency initiatives, EDP provides more safety and comfort to the population and hospital employees.” points out Alexandre Rodello, EDP manager.

Combating Covid-19

In Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, for Santa Casa de Misericórdia, EDP donated R$ 1 million to purchase individual protection supplies, equipment and medicines for the care of Covid-19 patients. The entity is a reference in the south of the state in the treatment of the disease and benefits the poorest population in the region.
