EDP Brasil is committed to the UN to reduce emissions and limit global warming
Company will sign the Business Ambition for 1.5 ºC - Our Only Future, joining the global initiative Science Based Targets
EDP Brasil, a company that operates throughout the electricity sector chain, today submitted, on World Environment Day, to the United Nations (UN) the commitment to reduce its emissions to guarantee that global warming does not exceed 1.5 °C, adhering to the Business Ambition for 1.5 °C - Our Only Future. The company will also join Recover Better, a global initiative that proposes governments and businesses around the world to align their recovery and economic aid efforts related to the Covid-19 crisis based on the latest climate studies.
EDP Brasil will commit to ensuring that, by 2030, 100% of the energy generated by the Company will be from renewable sources. At the global level, the EDP Group had already adhered to the Business Ambition for 1.5ºC - Our Only Future in September 2019, with a view to reducing its CO2 emissions by 90% compared to 2005.
Through this initiative, EDP, which already had the purpose of leading the energy transition in Brazil, formalizes the efforts it has been making to decarbonize its operation. Currently, 75% of the Company's installed capacity comes from renewable sources. The Company also has about 50 MWp in solar energy contracted or executed projects. Another bet on a more sustainable future is the Company's investment in electric mobility. Among the projects recently announced in this area, we highlight the installation of the first and largest network of ultra-fast chargers for electric vehicles in South America. The Company was also responsible, alongside BMW, for the installation of the first electric car supply corridor between Rio and São Paulo, making it possible to make a complete trip between the two most populous capitals in the country with complete autonomy.
“Leading the energy transition means taking the lead in search of a more balanced relationship with the planet. In the post-Covid resumption, it is essential to adopt a green agenda to contribute to the resolution of the climate emergency, preserving the sustainability of life on Earth”, says Miguel Setas, CEO of EDP Brasil.
Science Based Targets
Globally bringing together companies with a market value of more than USD 2.4 trillion and representing more than 5 million employees, the Science Based Targets movement proposes measures to support organizations in efforts to keep the global temperature rise only 1.5 ° C above pre-industrial levels, in line with the achievement of zero net emissions before 2050.
Participating companies are committed to setting science-based emission reduction targets. The document also calls on governments to prioritize a faster and fairer transition from a gray to a green economy. According to a study by the University of Oxford, policies and spending that incorporate climate targets reduce vulnerability to future shocks and disasters, creating good jobs, reducing emissions and ensuring clean air.
