EDP doubles investments in projects to combat the pandemic in vulnerable communities

Monday 27, April 2020

Due to the large number of registrations, the amount will reach R$ 2.1 million. First selected initiatives will serve approximately 20 thousand people from all over the country for three months

EDP Brasil, a company that operates in all segments of the Brazilian electricity sector, decided to double the amount available in the EDP Solidária - Covid 19 call to support projects to deal with the pandemic in vulnerable communities, such as low-income and indigenous communities.  Due to the large number of projects registered, the Company announced that it will donate R$ 2.1 million - instead of R$ 1 million, as originally planned. In just over ten days, the public notice received more than 600 projects from all Brazilian states.

In this first round, 24 projects were selected, aimed at donating food, hygiene and cleaning products and other basic needs, which will be acquired through a food card that will be destined to the final beneficiaries and the acquisition of basic baskets for indigenous communities donations, transferred through the EDP Institute, will directly benefit around 20 thousand people in vulnerable communities in all regions of Brazil for three months, totaling R$ 1.5 million to offer these essential resources. The selection process was attended by an external committee, formed by Carlo Pereira, executive director of the Global Pact in Brazil, and Regina Esteves, chief executive of the social organization Comunitas and was audited by EY. In the coming days, the winning projects in the other categories of the notice will be announced.

“We gave priority to the announcement of the selected projects that need to be attended to with greater urgency - those that involve donations of food and hygiene and cleaning products. Then, we will announce the winners in other areas”, says Luís Carlos Gouveia, director of the EDP Institute. “The number of entries surprised us and made us double the initial donation target. We believe that we have achieved a range of serious and interesting initiatives, which will play a fundamental role in facing the pandemic among the people who need it most”, adds the IEDP director.
