EDP concludes installation of Brametal solar plant

Wednesday 11, March 2020

With a generation capacity of 2,409 MWh per year, the project will provide annual savings of R$ 360 thousand and avoid the emission of 260 tons of CO2

EDP, a company that operates in all segments of the Brazilian electricity sector, through EDP Smart, a division that brings together the Company's energy solutions portfolio, delivered one of the largest solar plants in Espírito Santo for Brametal. Located in Linhares (ES), close to the company's factory, the plant generates 2,489 MWh per year, enough to supply more than 1,000 households per month. Brametal has one of the largest factories in the world in the production of fire-galvanized metal structures for the generation and transmission of electric energy, telecommunications and the generation of renewable energy from wind and photovoltaic sources.

The solar plant consists of 3,780 photovoltaic modules distributed over an area of about 40 thousand square meters, approximately the size of six football fields, and has tracking technology, in which the modules move according to the changes in the angle of the sun's rays for a better utilization of the irradiation. The energy generated at the unit will avoid the emission of 260 tons of CO2, which is equivalent to the planting of 1,925 trees. In addition to the environmental benefit, the solution will make it possible to reduce electricity costs at the Brametal plant by approximately R$ 360 thousand per year.

“With this solar plant, EDP delivers to Brametal a solution that combines energy efficiency and sustainability, yielding financial and environmental gains. It is one of the largest projects of its kind in Espírito Santo, contributing to reinforce the State's position in the renewable energy segment ”, highlights Carlos Andrade, vice president of Strategy and New Business at EDP Brasil.

“In addition to the gain in sustainability, we are proud to say that this is the first Solar Park in Espírito Santo with the use of a solar tracker, and with technology compared to those used in Solar Photovoltaic Plants for Centralized Electricity Generation, that is, UFV with more than 5 MW. As a traditional company in the supply of products for generation and transmission of electricity, we want to participate in this growing market. By joining expertise, from now on, we will be able to demonstrate in practice to our customers that we have the best technology, which is 100% national, to produce what the market needs with the quality and deadlines that have won the customers' trust in almost 45 years of experience at Brametal ”, says Alexandre Schmidt, commercial and marketing director at Brametal.

Focus on energy solutions

EDP has a unit dedicated to the implementation of solar self-production and distributed generation ventures, being responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the systems. Currently, the Company has 46 MWp in negotiated projects - 24 MWp of which have already been delivered and another 22 MWp already contracted.   Among the highlights, EDP delivered two solar plants to Grupo Globo. One of them was installed in the new studios opened in Rio de Janeiro. With an installed capacity of 766 kWp, the unit is capable of generating 1,055 MWh/year. The other is at the broadcaster's offices in Recife and generates about 269 thousand kWh per year.

The company also built a photovoltaic complex for Multiplan, one of the largest groups in the shopping center industry in the country. Located in Itacarambi, in the north of Minas Gerais, the set of two plants totals the capacity of 8.33 MWp, generating 17.5 GWh per year and yielding an annual savings of R$ 5.5 million, according to information from Multiplan.

Solar energy in Espírito Santo

The installed power of solar energy almost tripled in Espírito Santo in 2019, exceeding the sector's expectations. The initial forecast was for an increase of 250%, but at the end of the year, the growth achieved was 281%. The State ended 2019 with 36.9 MWp, according to data from the Brazilian Solar Photovoltaic Energy Association (ABSOLAR).

In the national ranking of distributed photovoltaic generation, the State occupies the 14th place, with about 1.9% of the total generated in the country. Brazil has 2.4 GW of installed capacity, adding generation in houses, farms and large solar plants.
