The new facility will serve over 150 thousand local residents

EDP, an electrical energy distributor from the state of Espírito Santo, has started expansion and modernization works at its Castelo Substation today (14/03). The Company has invested R$ 10 million in the substation to increase operational flexibility and improve the quality of service as part of its effort to support regional development. The new facility will serve over 150 thousand local residents.

At the capacity of the Castelo Substation, located in the city of the same name, has increased by 56 MVA, from 69 MVA to 125 MVA. The additional capacity will benefit regional customers as well as residents in Conceição do Castelo, Venda Nova do Imigrante, Muniz Freire, Ibatiba, Ipuna, Irupi and Ibitirama.

At the substation now has four energy transformers, two producing 138/69 kV - 50 MVA each and another two producing 69/15 kV - 12.5 MVA each. The Castelo Substation project is part of EDP’s investment plan for Espírito Santo.

“The additional capacity from the Castelo Substation will reinforce power supplies and support economic growth across the region. The energy distribution infrastructure is now ready for future investment across the region and will increase reliability, in line with our strict technical and safety standards, and improve power supply quality”, said João Brito Martins, Director at EDP.

At the Castelo Substation - and all of the Company’s other substations - are fully automated and remotely operated to support quality assurance. Substation operations also comply with the group sustainability policy, which aims to reduce environmental impacts from site operations and includes a wide range of measure, such as construction of oil containment basins.

All Company substations are monitored remotely from the System Operations Center (SOC) in Carapina. The 24-hour SOC communicates directly to offer more than 1.5 million customers effective customer service. The Operations Center can also perform real-time monitoring of the entire energy grid supplying the Distributor’s concession areas and provide weather analyses.
