From June 8 to 11, the events will promote the Portuguese culture and encourage cultural exchanges between Brazil and Portugal

EDP, company that operates across all areas of the country’s electricity chain, is the main sponsor of the Fado Festival, taking place between June 8 and 9 in Rio de Janeiro and June 10 and 11 in São Paulo.

At the Fado Festival promotes Portuguese heritage and spurs cultural and artistic exchanges between Brazil and Portugal. Carminho and António Zambujo, two of today’s most prominent fado musicians, will be singing at the events.

Carminho is an internationally renowned Portuguese musician and considered the greatest voice of the new fado generation. Daughter of famous fado singer Teresa Siqueira, Carminho began to sing at the age of 12 and never looked back. She will perform songs from her new album “Maria”. This is her second visit to Brazil at the invitation of EDP. At last year’s Sala São Paulo, the singer took part in the “Letras da Luz” concert alongside Gilberto Gil, celebrating the EDP Institute’s 10th anniversary.

António Zambujo was voted best male fado performer by the Amália Rodrigues Foundation in Lisbon. The singer, who has had a successful career in the Portuguese music scene, will revisit traditional fado songs and add a contemporary twist with guitars, bass and piano.

From Casablanca to Seville, through Santiago, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Bogota, Madrid and Barcelona, the 2019 Fado Festival will introduce António Zambujo to the world.

Passion for art, music and culture

A large part of the company’s mission is to showcase the depth and breadth of the Portuguese language, which is why EDP decided to become the biggest sponsor for reconstruction of São Paulo’s Portuguese Language Museum, investing R$ 20 million through 2019.

During the first quarter of the year, the Company announced a R$ 12 million sponsorship program to renovate the Ipiranga Museum, which has been closed since 2013. The initiative will also be supported by the Federal Cultural Incentive Act and EDP will be working alongside the University of São Paulo (USP).

In Brazil, EDP also manages the EDP Live Bands competition, which recently presented its top prize to Minas Gerais-based band “ETC” in the 4th edition of the event. The band will have an opportunity to play at NOS Alive’19, one of Europe biggest music festivals, with is being held from July 11 to 13 in Lisbon, Portugal, and will also be recording their own CD with Sony Music.

Portuguese-Brazilian Festival

At the Festival’s theme, “Fado and other Songs”, will showcase Fado’s interactions with other national and international musical-poetic genres. This year’s event will be a magical tour through two centuries of constant change at the interface between fado and other genres and songs.

Fado’s global reputation began to grow in 2013 after events in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and It is returning with new performances, a conference, a masterclass in Portuguese guitar playing, movies and an exhibition that has received the seal of approval from the Fado Museum in Lisbon. The Festival, which was first held in 2011 in Madrid, will visit over 12 major cities in Europe, Africa and Latin America.
