May 29 underlined the importance of efficient energy consumption

World Energy Day, which is celebrated on May 29, was created in 1981 to raise public and political awareness about the importance of efficient energy use.  Best practices can being by changing small, everyday habits to reduce waste, help the environment and cut energy bills.

As part of this effort, EDP, working through its electrical energy distributors in Espírito Santo and São Paulo, is reinforcing energy efficiency guidelines:

Shower

Using a broken resistance and spliced wiring is not only a safety risk, it could increase energy consumption. On cold days, make your showers as short as possible (5-8 minutes) because showers use 30% more electricity on the “winter” setting.

Refrigerator or freezer

Place your fridge or freezer away from sunlight and the furthest possible distance from the stove. Do not put hot food in the refrigerator, this forces the appliance to work harder for longer.

At the rubber seal lining the door should always be kept in good condition, preventing cool air loss. Never use the back of the refrigerator to dry cloths or clothing and if the appliance is over ten years old, it may be time to think about a replacement.. New refrigerator models are more cost-effective and efficient.

Lighting

LED bulbs are an excellent lighting option because they last longer and use less electricity. Consider the possibility of replacing older bulbs in higher traffic areas. Remember to turn your lights off when leaving home and use sunlight whenever possible.

Painting your ceiling and walls with lighter colors means more light is reflected, reducing the need for artificial lighting.

Iron

Irons can overload your wiring if the electrical outlet does not provide enough power. Ideally, iron all your clothes are the same time and begin with the thinner items that require a lower temperature to save energy.

Wiring

Current leakage is one of the most common causes of wasted energy and higher electricity bills. Several factors, such as poor wiring repairs, loose connections, bare wires or poor insulation, can lead to overheating on the wiring and cause current leakage. They can also cause short circuits and even fires.

Buying new appliances

At the Procel Seal ranks Brazilian appliances using the National Energy Saving Label (ENCE), produced by Inmetro. Appliances are ranked from "A” (most efficient) to “E” (least efficient). The more efficient an appliance, the lower its energy consumption, helping protect the environment and reduce energy bills.

Importantly, efficient appliances require good electrical wiring, so maintenance is crucial.
