The substation will increase electricity supply quality for everyone and boost regional customer service capabilities, paving the way for new power connections

EDP, an electrical energy distributor from the Alto Tietê, Vale do Paraiba and the north coast of São Paulo regions, has officially inaugurated the Mantiqueira Energy Distribution Transformer Substation (ETD) in Taubaté. Following an R$ 13 million investment, the substation will benefit the entire city by improving electricity supplies and expanding the system’s energy capabilities to support regional economic development. Today’s (13) inauguration event was attended by local officials and EDP representatives.

At the Substation located in the Independência neighborhood will bring immediate improvements to places such as the Quiririm district and the Piracangaguá industrial complex. It will also support the city’s growth and its 167 thousand customers, alongside the two existing Taubaté and Barreiro units, it will also help improve the current system.

At the Mantiqueira ETD (138/13.8 kV) can produce 66 MVA, distributed across six medium voltage feeder lines, two transformers producing 33MVA and 13.8kV six supply circuits. The unit is equipped with acoustic technology that prevents sound propagation, underlining the company’s efforts to help protect the local community and environment.

All of the Substation’s operations are remotely controlled from the Integrated Operation Center (COI) at EDP headquarters in Mogi das Cruzes. The unit is completely computerized and has an integrated monitoring, command, control and protection system. The station is also equipped with a modern video monitoring system to increase safety and allow COI operators to view operations and services involving high-voltage equipment remotely.

A 9.5 km network has also been built to connect the ETD to the Distributor’s local grid. The network includes cutting edge technology which will improve safety and mitigate the impact from external agents such as vegetation, one of the main issues affecting energy supply quality during strong wind and rain.

EDP SP currently serves 1.9 million customers, around 4.5 million people, through 63 concession area substations. Station construction, expansion and modernization are fundamental to support increased demand and achieve customer service excellence. “The Mantiqueira Substation was built to directly benefit the region, which presents significant potential for industrial expansion. This will support economic and social development in Taubaté, help attract new businesses and subsequently generating more jobs”, said Marney Antunes, Managing Director at EDP.
