Up to 50% energy savings from illumination; Over 2 thousand high power usage light bulbs will be replaced with LEDs

At the Jesus, Jose e Maria Hospital and Maternity Facility in Guarulhos has been included in the Energy Efficiency Program - EEP - which is run by EDP, a regional electrical energy distributor. The Hospital is run by the Jesus, Jose e Maria Charitable Association, a non-profit, philanthropic organization that performs around 560 deliveries per month and provides a wide array of procedures for low-income women in the Guarulhos region.

At the EDP campaign modernizes old lighting systems, replacing them with more efficient, economic and sustainable LED lights. Over 2 thousand light bulbs will be replaced in the Hospital’s internal and external areas.

This lighting system project will save 157.7 megawatts-hour (MWh/hour), equivalent to the average annual consumption of over 60 families. Maintenance costs will also drop as LED lights has a lifespan of 25 thousand hours (around seven times longer than incandescent bulbs). The new system will also reduce any environmental impact it does not use mercury or other toxic components.

“It is extremely rewarding for us to carry out this project at the Jesus, Jose e Maria Hospital and Maternity Facility in Guarulhos and make a direct contribution to reducing energy expenditure. Based on our energy efficiency initiatives, these savings can be used to invest in resources for public healthcare”, said Luciano Cavalcante, executive manager at EDP.

Equipment replacement will begin in October and is scheduled to be completed within 3 months. The project was included in the Public Call for Projects - CPP 001/2017, which is part of EDP’s Energy Efficiency Program, regulated by the National Electrical Energy Agency - ANEEL.

Jesus, Jose e Maria Hospital and Maternity

At the Maternity Hospital opened on December 16, 2001 and focuses exclusively on patients treated by the National Health Service (SUS). It performs around 560 deliveries a month and provides a wide array of procedures for low-income women in the Guarulhos region, such as: gynecological surgery, breast care, mammograms, ultrasounds and bone densitometry.

At the Maternity has a joint accommodation structure, allowing and encouraging mothers to stay near their newborn children from the day they are born and throughout their hospital stay, as well as an Intensive Care Unit for Infants equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and a multidisciplinary team to support critical, premature and underweight newborns.

In 2011, the Jesus, Jose e Maria Charitable Association opened an Intensive Care Unit for adults with designated beds for critical female patients, significantly improving support for high-risk pregnant women.

The Hospital also encourages and promotes breastfeeding.
